Who this work enables

Tools & support for charities: Public policy research, strategic analysis and coalition learning can help civil-society organizations engage with AI governance without each building a specialist research team.

Humanity’s Checklist source match

Story · Gatekeepers · Coordination — editorial, partial alignment.

Strategic narratives and coalition analysis address how concentrated AI power is framed and contested. This is partial editorial alignment, not a verified redistribution of power.

Explicit checklist adoption: not verified. A mechanism match is not an affiliation, endorsement, evidence of effectiveness or a scoring bonus. Read the practice.

Focus classification: 2026-10-27. Based on the organization’s dated official sources below; earlier axis-review dates are unchanged.

The proposed pathway

Develop shared policy strategies and narratives around concentrated AI power

Six dimensions, with rationale

Structural depth

3 / 4

Policy strategies addressing surveillance and market concentration target institutional rules and incentives rather than offering only individual technical fixes.

Institutional reach

3 / 4

Research and coalition work can reach policymakers and civil-society institutions; invitations to advise are not proof that recommendations were adopted or effective.

Durability

2 / 4

Published analysis and adopted policy can persist, but political windows, enforcement and evolving technology limit durability without continued institutional work.

Scalability

3 / 4

Shared research and strategic framing can be reused across campaigns, while specialist expertise, jurisdictional differences and coalition trust constrain replication.

Funding additionality

Unreviewed

Unknown: stated rejection of corporate funding does not establish a current marginal funding gap, an unfunded policy opportunity or a donation counterfactual.

Community agency

Unreviewed

Unknown: community partnerships and public-accountability aims do not establish binding affected-community authority over the institute’s priorities, budgets or policy choices.

A testable next question

Does a specific AI Now policy strategy used by a public-interest coalition lead to a documented, implemented accountability measure that would plausibly not have occurred otherwise, rather than only a citation or meeting?

Review confidence: Low–medium for the documented mechanism; low for causal effectiveness and donation comparisons. AI Now Institute’s current independent nonprofit policy research and coalition capacity, not a present NYU-sponsored programme, a software platform or all downstream policy changes.

What remains uncertain

The current site identifies AI Now as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) and says it has operated independently since mid-2022; the historical NYU origin is not treated as its current sponsor. This scope covers current policy research and coalition work, not all academic work associated with its name. Its no-corporate-funding statement is self-reported, not an independent financial audit. Research visibility, policy access and narratives do not establish causal changes or endorse every policy position. No named software license was inspected and no open-source badge is assigned.
