Dataset v0.1

Reviewed 2026-10-06. The dataset contains 40 profiles. Scores are preliminary hypotheses, and missing values are JSON null. Original summaries and editorial annotations are offered under CC BY 4.0; software is MIT. External source material remains under its own terms. Our licenses do not grant rights to evaluator prose, logos or databases.

Foundations and boundaries

We researched GivingTuesday's MIT-licensed Form 990 XML mapper, ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer API, RPublica and CharityLens. This initial release uses original summaries and source links, and includes a small original adapter for live registry lookup. We do not mirror ProPublica's raw dataset or copy unlicensed code. The source and license record explains the choices.

Registry lookup is not impact evaluation

US tax-filing records can identify entities and describe reported finances. Registration, a filing, an overhead ratio or a returned API result cannot establish systemic impact. The optional registry tool runs locally and keeps raw responses out of the public dataset.

Reproducible review

Each profile records source URLs, rationales, review date, selection reason and limitations. Validation rejects missing provenance, invalid scores and accidental publication of credentials. Changes can be proposed through GitHub issues and reviewed before publication.
