Blender Foundation
The Dutch nonprofit foundation supports Blender and its public development ecosystem. The enabling hypothesis is lower technical barriers for public-interest visualization and media work, not a claim that any resulting story or simulation improves society.

Who this work enables
Tools & support for charities: Reusable 3D creation infrastructure can help nonprofit educators, researchers and communicators avoid rebuilding or licensing every production component.
Open-source evidence · license checked
- Blender source — GPL-2.0-or-later source default; binary and component terms differ license file. Organization’s role: steward.
Inspected the GPL text and root pointer in the official GitHub mirror; canonical development is on projects.blender.org. The official license page distinguishes source defaults, GPL-3.0-or-later binaries, permissive components, artwork and other assets. License-file snapshot:8860b2a8afa8c8586992f7f374a099956563a152.
License checked 2026-10-27. This is not a security audit, proof of current support or effectiveness, or a promise of free hosting. A sponsor or steward is not necessarily the sole developer. Unchecked profiles are not evidence of closed code. No extra score points are added.
Humanity’s Checklist source match
Gatekeepers · Coordination — editorial, partial alignment.
A reusable production commons can reduce proprietary gatekeeping and coordinate technical contributions. It is not automatically a checklist Story intervention or evidence that resulting media changes institutions.
Explicit checklist adoption: not verified. A mechanism match is not an affiliation, endorsement, evidence of effectiveness or a scoring bonus. Read the practice.
Focus classification: 2026-10-27. Based on the organization’s dated official sources below; earlier axis-review dates are unchanged.

The proposed pathway
Sustain a reusable creative-technology pipeline outside a proprietary license model
Six dimensions, with rationale
Structural depth
3 / 4Reusable creative infrastructure can reduce dependency on proprietary production tools, though access to software alone does not reform media or research institutions.
Institutional reach
4 / 4A common 3D pipeline can enable educational, scientific and public-interest communication work across sectors.
Durability
3 / 4Reusable code and production knowledge can outlast a grant, but maintenance, hardware compatibility and training need ongoing work.
Scalability
4 / 4A shared pipeline can be reused without duplicating core development, while skilled production and computing remain substantial costs.
Funding additionality
UnreviewedNo current marginal funding bottleneck or counterfactual between foundation, commercial studios and community contributions was audited.
Community agency
UnreviewedPublic development channels and fund membership do not establish binding affected-community rights over the foundation or downstream productions.

A testable next question
Do nonprofit teams adopting supported Blender retain useful, accessible production workflows and lower lifecycle dependency costs than comparable teams using proprietary tools, after training, hardware and support are included?
Review confidence: Moderate for documented design; low for systemic attribution. Stichting Blender Foundation’s nonprofit stewardship of the Blender software commons and support model, not every working company, paid content service or downstream creative output.
What remains uncertain
The legal contact identifies Stichting Blender Foundation, Dutch registry 34176425. The Development Fund page says Blender is not an officially recognized charity for tax benefits; this profile does not assert donor eligibility. Much operational work is through Blender Institute, with Blender Studio distinct. Source defaults to GPL-2.0-or-later, some components use permissive licenses, and the official page identifies GPL-3.0-or-later for distributed binaries. The inspected version-2 text is not a uniform license for every asset. No security, accessibility, scientific-validity or media-impact audit occurred.
