Who this work enables

Tools & support for charities: PeerTube provides reusable federated video software that nonprofit publishers can adapt instead of building their own distribution platform.

Open-source evidence · license checked

  • PeerTube — AGPL-3.0 license file. Organization’s role: maintainer.
Inspected PeerTube’s license, README identifying Framasoft development and non-archived repository status. Other historical projects are outside this check; content rights, dependencies, moderation, bandwidth and hosted-service terms are separate. License checked 2026-10-27. This is not a security audit, proof of current support or effectiveness, or a promise of free hosting. A sponsor or steward is not necessarily the sole developer. Unchecked profiles are not evidence of closed code. No extra score points are added.

Humanity’s Checklist source match

Attention · Gatekeepers — editorial, partial alignment.

Independent video infrastructure can reduce platform gatekeeping and create alternatives to advertising-oriented attention systems. This partial mapping is not evidence that deployed feeds or moderation produce better outcomes.

Explicit checklist adoption: not verified. A mechanism match is not an affiliation, endorsement, evidence of effectiveness or a scoring bonus. Read the practice.

The proposed pathway

Develop reusable alternatives to concentrated digital-service platforms

Six dimensions, with rationale

Structural depth

3 / 4

Federated reusable infrastructure and digital-autonomy education can change reliance on concentrated platforms, though operating alternatives does not eliminate their surrounding incentives.

Institutional reach

4 / 4

Reusable video infrastructure can enable many public-interest publishers and organizations rather than one content campaign.

Durability

3 / 4

Forkable source and interoperable infrastructure can preserve options over time, with maintenance and operational competence still necessary.

Scalability

4 / 4

A shared software base can serve many independent deployments without each team rebuilding video distribution from scratch.

Funding additionality

Unreviewed

No current marginal funding bottleneck, displacement of other contributors or counterfactual platform investment was assessed.

Community agency

Unreviewed

Independent hosting and open contribution do not establish binding decision rights for affected viewers or communities within the association or each deployment.

A testable next question

Do public-interest publishers adopting supported PeerTube retain usable, affordable distribution and meaningful exit options over two years compared with centralized hosting, without worsening moderation, access or privacy harms?

Review confidence: Moderate for documented design; low for systemic attribution. Framasoft’s nonprofit digital-autonomy model, with PeerTube as the inspected tool; not every historical Framasoft-associated project or all independent PeerTube instances.

What remains uncertain

The legal notice identifies a French Loi 1901 association, SIRET 50071577600026. The selected scope is PeerTube, not an assumption that Framasoft currently maintains every historical project. AGPL code does not make hosting, moderation, bandwidth or compliance free. Content rights, abuse, privacy, accessibility and operational safety require separate review. Federation and an ad-free design do not prove healthier attention patterns or charity outcomes.
