Who this work enables

Tools & support for charities: Community infrastructure and reusable document tools can help nonprofit teams avoid duplicating software work and reduce dependence on a single supplier.

Open-source evidence · license checked

  • Okular — GPL-2.0-or-later text; per-file and other component licenses differ license file. Organization’s role: steward.
Inspected the named license text and README in KDE’s GitHub copy; canonical development is on KDE Invent. The repository contains several license families, and association support is not sole authorship or a certification of document safety. License-file snapshot: 3b6070fcd0c53e0e40d54f61cbe4e0e95b23a431.

License checked 2026-10-27. This is not a security audit, proof of current support or effectiveness, or a promise of free hosting. A sponsor or steward is not necessarily the sole developer. Unchecked profiles are not evidence of closed code. No extra score points are added.

Humanity’s Checklist source match

Gatekeepers · Coordination — editorial, partial alignment.

Shared software can reduce proprietary gatekeeper dependence and coordinate developer effort across organizations. These are partial mechanism links, not verified community agency or social effects.

Explicit checklist adoption: not verified. A mechanism match is not an affiliation, endorsement, evidence of effectiveness or a scoring bonus. Read the practice.

Focus classification: 2026-10-27. Based on the organization’s dated official sources below; earlier axis-review dates are unchanged.

The proposed pathway

Provide legal, financial and community infrastructure for a software commons

Six dimensions, with rationale

Structural depth

3 / 4

Supporting shared software institutions can reduce dependency on proprietary vendors, though ordinary tool adoption is not a complete institutional reform.

Institutional reach

4 / 4

General-purpose document and desktop tools can enable many kinds of organizations and developers rather than one local program.

Durability

3 / 4

Reusable source and an enduring contributor institution can preserve capability, but compatibility, funding and maintenance are continuing requirements.

Scalability

4 / 4

Shared tools can be distributed and adapted widely while training, integration and support remain local costs.

Funding additionality

Unreviewed

No marginal grant use, funding gap or displacement of KDE’s other community and commercial contributions was audited.

Community agency

Unreviewed

Association membership and developer participation are not evidence of binding rights for affected document users or nonprofit beneficiaries.

Evidence and selection

Organization reported; current primary mechanism sources inspected; named repository and license file checked

Illustrative inclusion to examine this mechanism. Inclusion is not an external recommendation or a verified comparative ranking.

A testable next question

Would nonprofit teams supported in adopting KDE document tooling maintain accessible workflows and lower dependency costs over two years compared with similar teams receiving commercial tool subsidies?

Review confidence: Moderate for documented design; low for systemic attribution. KDE e.V.’s legal, financial and contributor support role, with Okular as one scoped example; not the separately incorporated foundations or entire downstream software portfolio.

What remains uncertain

KDE e.V. is a registered German nonprofit association, not the same entity as every KDE project or the separate Krita Foundation. Okular’s LICENSES directory contains multiple license texts; the selected GPL-2.0-or-later file does not relicense every file or dependency. No PDF accessibility, security, adoption or impact audit occurred. Canonical development is on KDE Invent; this inspection used KDE’s GitHub copy.
