QGIS.org Association

QGIS.org is a Swiss not-for-profit association supporting the QGIS project. Its shared mapping and analysis tools can enable public-interest organizations, but software availability is not evidence of accurate data or equitable land decisions.

Who this work enables

Tools & support for charities: Reusable geospatial analysis software and shared project support can help nonprofit teams avoid rebuilding specialist mapping infrastructure.

Open-source evidence · license checked

  • QGIS — GPL-2.0 license text; plugins, data and component terms differ license file. Organization’s role: steward.
Inspected the application repository’s GPL text and current repository status. The Swiss association supports the project rather than solely authoring it; datasets, plugins, trademarks, dependencies and sensitive-location use are outside this check. License checked 2026-10-27. This is not a security audit, proof of current support or effectiveness, or a promise of free hosting. A sponsor or steward is not necessarily the sole developer. Unchecked profiles are not evidence of closed code. No extra score points are added.

Humanity’s Checklist source match

Gatekeepers · Coordination — editorial, partial alignment.

Shared mapping tools can lower proprietary information barriers and coordinate reusable technical work. This partial mapping does not establish data ownership, legal rights or fair decisions.

Explicit checklist adoption: not verified. A mechanism match is not an affiliation, endorsement, evidence of effectiveness or a scoring bonus. Read the practice.

The proposed pathway

Sustain reusable geospatial analysis infrastructure with a dedicated nonprofit institution

Six dimensions, with rationale

Structural depth

3 / 4

Reusable mapping infrastructure can reduce proprietary barriers to institutional analysis rather than buy access for one project.

Institutional reach

4 / 4

Common geospatial tools can enable environmental, humanitarian, planning and other public-interest organizations across sectors.

Durability

3 / 4

Public source, skills and a supporting institution can persist, but data, dependencies and maintenance require renewal.

Scalability

4 / 4

A shared application can be reused widely without duplicating core development, while data collection and interpretation remain local costs.

Funding additionality

Unreviewed

No current marginal association funding bottleneck or comparison with other geospatial-capacity investments was audited.

Community agency

Unreviewed

The charter documents voting-member budget and board powers, but those membership rights were not shown to represent affected communities’ binding authority over deployments.

A testable next question

Do nonprofit teams using supported QGIS infrastructure make more accurate, contestable and community-valued spatial decisions at lower lifecycle cost than comparable teams using existing tools, without increasing sensitive-data exposure?

Review confidence: Moderate for documented design; low for systemic attribution. The Swiss QGIS.org not-for-profit association’s dedicated project stewardship, not OSGeo’s separate GDAL/support scope, national user groups or the outcomes of every map.

What remains uncertain

The charter identifies a Swiss association, distinct from OSGeo’s legal entities and local user groups. The OSGeo profile in this batch is limited to its US support/GDAL example, not QGIS funding again. The inspected GPL version-2 text does not certify every plugin, dataset or dependency. Accurate-looking maps can still misrepresent uncertainty or expose sensitive locations; land rights, consent, accessibility and decision quality need separate review. Association governance is not a beneficiary-agency audit or donor-eligibility verification.
