R Foundation for Statistical Computing

The R Foundation is a non-profit-oriented association seated in Vienna that supports R and statistical-computing collaboration. The inspected R source mirror illustrates software stewardship, not proof that any particular analysis or charity evaluation is valid.

Who this work enables

Tools & support for charities: Shared statistical-computing code, scientific coordination and training can reduce duplicated analytical infrastructure; the inspected R mirror is a scoped example.

Open-source evidence · license checked

License checked 2026-10-27. This is not a security audit, proof of current support or effectiveness, or a promise of free hosting. A sponsor or steward is not necessarily the sole developer. Unchecked profiles are not evidence of closed code. No extra score points are added.

Humanity’s Checklist source match

Gatekeepers · Coordination — editorial, partial alignment.

Reusable statistical infrastructure can reduce supplier gatekeeping over analytical tools and make scientific collaboration easier. This does not establish that analyses are sound or that the checklist is explicitly adopted.

Explicit checklist adoption: not verified. A mechanism match is not an affiliation, endorsement, evidence of effectiveness or a scoring bonus. Read the practice.

Focus classification: 2026-10-27. Based on the organization’s dated official sources below; earlier axis-review dates are unchanged.

The proposed pathway

Sustain reusable statistical software and scientific collaboration

Six dimensions, with rationale

Structural depth

3 / 4

Supporting shared statistical infrastructure can alter the tools available for research and institutional decisions rather than fund only individual analyses.

Institutional reach

4 / 4

Statistical computing is useful across health, environment and public-interest institutions; actual reach to charities is not measured here.

Durability

3 / 4

Redistributable code and scientific methods can persist, while maintenance, package compatibility and training remain continuing needs.

Scalability

4 / 4

A common statistical environment can support many analyses with reusable methods, but data quality, expertise and local validation do not scale automatically.

Funding additionality

Unreviewed

No current marginal support bottleneck, counterfactual R Core funding or causal effect of an additional foundation donation was audited.

Community agency

Unreviewed

Scientific collaboration and association membership do not establish affected communities’ binding control over R priorities, analytical uses or foundation budgets.

Evidence and selection

Illustrative inclusion to examine this mechanism. Inclusion is not an external recommendation or a verified comparative ranking.

A testable next question

Does a specified foundation-supported R maintenance or training intervention improve independently reproduced analyses in public-interest institutions relative to similar teams without it, after accounting for analyst skills and data quality?

Review confidence: Moderate for documented design; low for systemic attribution. The R Foundation association’s support, copyright and scientific-coordination role for R. It is not the whole GNU project, every R package, or a duplicate assessment of the Free Software Foundation.

What remains uncertain

The November 2025 statutes identify the Vienna association and non-profit-oriented purpose, not US charitable deductibility. R is part of GNU, but this independent foundation’s scoped role is not all FSF activity. r-devel/r-svn describes itself as an SVN mirror with testing CI, not the canonical development system. Its COPYING contains GPL version 2; doc/COPYRIGHTS says R as a whole is GPL version 2 or 3, most files version 2 or later, with component exceptions. Add-on packages, data, documentation and commercial services require separate checks. Statistical software availability does not establish correct analyses, causal attribution, security or ethical data use.
